Spheres of Evil (Beta) Review

Spheres of Evil is a top-down indie game by Back to the Abyss studios who gave Woolstaz access to the games beta for a review. The game crosses several genres of action/RPG/arcade elements giving it mass appeal. Essentially you play as a small ball which must travel through a maze whilst releasing demons which angels have trapped and then escape. By freeing the demons the player receives power and level-ups. If finding your way through through the complex mazes wasn't enough then traps and obstacles also make this game that much harder. Making it easy to see why Woolstaz died so much in his game plays. After all the game's slogan is 'You will die. A lot'.

Currently there are only 5 playable levels but the developers ,who together have decades of experience in the gaming industry, promise 70 more. Currently, at the time of writing they are still working on more levels, traps and an inventory system. Furthermore, the game has great replay value especially for completionists like Sean as they plan to add secret areas and collectables. This is great for all who purchases this game as it ensures it isn't just another quickly made Indie game which are currently saturating the market after the success of games like Super Meat Boy.

The Back to the Abyss studio team consists of programmer and designer Diego Sendra and graphic designer Ehab M. Samuel and is their first game to be released for retail. Together they have created a fully licensed and customised soundtrack which adds to the intensity of the game even more as any wrong move could easily lead to your death!

What we liked most about this game was its relative simplicity in controls which means that like other indie games it seems easy when watching trailers but in reality it is far from it. Whilst is demonology theme keeps the game unique and quirky adding somewhat of a purpose to escaping the maze.

Bearing in mind that the game is still in beta stage there were minor visual and sound issues however the develops have promised to fix these before full release.
